We welcome applications from individuals and groups: please contact the Exhibitions Officer at Craft in the Bay for further details..

Blossom

5th January - 28th February 2010

Currently showing in Oriel 2 at Craft in the Bay is a wonderful array of silver and enamel jewellery and an interactive art piece by three talented young designers.
Emma Pearce completed her BA in Contemporary Applied Arts at Swansea Metropolitan University in 2008 and has incorporated digital technologies into her craft work to explore the concept of drawing as a physical entity. Her practice combines an experimental approach to drawing with cross disciplinary mixed media works that merge new technologies with traditional processes. Conceptually Emma is concerned with the visualisation of motion, energy and action. She is interested in forensic science, traces of actions, forgotten happenings and memories. In this exhibition at Craft in the Bay Emma has created an interactive art work that encourages the public to draw using her unique drawing apparatus that she has constructed from wood.

Sally Pawson creates colourful items of jewellery which have been inspired by playfullness - she loves wooden toys, simple patterns and vintage plastics. Her range of silver jewellery on show in the Blossom exhibition include earrings, necklaces and bangles - all with striking and simple patterns.

Sally's jewellery is all hand made using traditional silversmithing and metalsmithing techniques. She has also employed modern technologies to create her innovative designs that make a bold statement in the field of contemporary jewellery. She wants jewellery to be 'less serious', creating pieces that are both beautiful and fun.

Sarah Hallowes is exhibiting her delicate silver and antique beaded jewellery. Exploring mark making and textures in silver sheet, her designs reflect contemporary shapes, forms and patterns. The use of reclaimed semi precious beads and stones create a fragile, timeless quality to the jewellery.

International Womens Festival 2010

2nd March - 31st March 2010

Jean Walcott and Heather Evans will be exhibiting their work in Oriel 2 as part of the International Womens Festival.

Jean is an abstract painter using various media such as oils, waxes (hot and cold), acrylics and egg termpera. She is stimulated by her interpretation of the body and body parts. Mostly working on a large scale she enjoys the occasional challenge of smaller works. Jean exhibits regularly throughout Wales and the USA and will again be taking up a residency in Vermont this May.

Heather studied painting and stained glass design at Swansea College of Art. Following 22 years of teaching art, she concentrated on glass design and construction and restoring church windows. Heather has exhibited her work across Wales and the West of England.

Heather finds inspiration for her work in nature, man-made structures and materials which offer a wealth of colour, texture and line. Each element is explored and a harmonious link forged. Often 'found fragments' are incorporated into projects to reinforce the link. Techniques used varied from traditional to experimental. The ocean and shore lines hold a particular fascination for Heather.

Memories and Presences

2nd April - 3rd May 2010

Sara Easby and Laura Holliday exhibiting their humorous three dimensional characters made from fabrics and recycled materials as part of the 2010 International Womens Festival.

Natalia Dias

5th May - 30th June 2010

An exhibition showcasing recent work by artist Natalia Dias. Having graduated in 2009 from Cardiff School of Art & Design with a First Class Degree in Ceramics, Nathalia has exhibited at the New Designers in London and Aberystwyth International Ceramics Festival. We are very pleased to be showing her body of work which is an allegory to the human condition.

As Natalia describes; 'The Alchemical journey that an individual takes from birth to death in search of harmony and which can be manifest through love. Love is a way of transforming the ephemeral into eternal.'

'Regarding the individual and the collective I intend to express the brittle transiency of life and its humble beauty. The pure fact of matter from the minute to the infinite and its eternal ephemera.'

Spotlight on a Maker: Melissa Warren

Saturday 3rd July - Tuesday 31st August

Textile artist and member of the Makers Guild in Wales, Melissa Warren is showing her recent body of work in Oriel 2 as the first in our series of 'Spotlight on a Maker' exhibitions. Members of the Makers Guild in Wales have the opportunity to put up a mini-exhibition of recent work not previously exhibited in the retail area at Craft in the Bay. The artists will be supporting their exhibition with either artist talks, demonstrations or workshops. Details will be given shortly.

This collection of accessories can evolve and change in many ways. 'Lillypad' Bag' for example, is also a wallhangin and it is reversible, to a different colour and texture. The pieces are also based on some found or unusual or even recycled items. 'Lillypad' is constructed using two metal lampshade frames.

The collection will also include neckpieces, headwear and body pieces as well as other bags. The work is concerned with utilising the inherent qualities of fibres and yarns, it is about stretching, sometimes literally, to the limits, about transparency and fragilitiy, through the medium of plain knittin on hand frame knitting machines.
