An exhibition of sculptural forms in metal. Three artists; Sue Lowday, Marianne Forrest and Benjamin Storch have been bought together in this exhibition to celebrate their shared passion for working in metal - however this is where the similarity ends as each have their own unique style and have manipulated the materials to create very individual art works.
Lowday's vessels evoke suggestions of ancient archaeological finds. The textured surfaces suggest stitched fabric and as you move closer to investigate you are in awe of the idea of them being created from patinated copper and silver plate. Having trained in metalwork and jewellery at Sheffield University, Lowday has made pioneering investigations into new processes involving electroforming and reticulation using recycled copper.
The evocation of ancient and eroded forms in Lowday's vessels bares a similarity to the passing of time prevalent in Forrest's time-pieces. Not only do Forrest's sculptural wall pieces serve as practical clocks, they have mutated from their humble roots as pieces of chicken wire, string and recycled metal, to their current designer status. Forrest enjoys looking at materials in new ways and transforming them from their original purpose. She has undertaken many public commissions and educational projects, including plans for an exciting community project in Ebbw Vale.
In contrast to the more organic surfaces evident in Lowday's and Forrest's pieces, the polished sculpture of Benjamin Storch catches the eye with its vibrant reflections and sharp forms. Storch is inspired by a kinaesthetic sense of motion and imagery of dynamical systems in nature and physics. Drawing on practical experiments, mathematics and CAD, he twists the surfaces of flat sheets of metal, stretching the peripheral surface and compressing the central areas. The result is an inspiring collection on dynamic, fluid forms that have an incredible presence of movement and tension that appear to defy gravity.

Baltic Way
21 July - 9 September 2007

An exciting exhibition of contemporary craft and applied art made by artists living in the Baltic States of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. The exhibition has been made possible with the kind support of the Estonian Embassy in London, curator Kristi Paap, ceramicist Ilona Romule and ceramicist Dalia Lauckaite-Jakimaviciene.
Among the thirteen exhibiting artists is the colourful porcelain figurative work of Jolanta Kvasyte who gains inspiration from the animated atmosphere of the carnival. Monika Jarg's interests lie in what is under the surface and this is reflected in her thought-provoking textile forms.
Peteris Martinsons creates sculptural forms from thin porcelain slabs and porcelain slip. Firing in wood fired kilns with soda and salt glaze, Martinson enhances the textured surface of the clay with warm colours of enamel and lustre.
A wonderful opportunity to see the stimulating work to emanate from these geographicllay linked but otherwise very indidivual countries.

Artist in residence: Bags of flowers
10 - 14 July 2007

Artist Claudia Borgna transformed the exhibition space with hundreds of colourful flowers made from recycled bottles and plastic bags. Working with schools groups, Claudia suspended the flowers from the ceiling of the gallery to create a 'field' of colour and movement. Claudia says of her work; 'By putting the plastic bag in an artistic context I would like to elevate it to another dimension that takes it away from the idea of the banal and obvious and for an instant transforms it into a poetic object.'

Confluence
11 May - 7 July 2007

An exhibition of sculpture by artists Sue Hiley Harris and Richard Renshaw. Though very different in material and process, these two artists share inspiration from a passion for the dramatic environment of the Brecon Beacons National Park.
'Confluence, referencing a flowing together or meeting of rivers ..... is also use more literally to signify a shared interest in forms relating to the flow of water.' David Moore.
Sue creates sculptures that have been intricately woven from yarn, more recently from copper wire and nylon threads. Many of her pieces are designed to be hung outdoors from the branches of trees. The colour changes in the copper wire created by exposure to water and sun over a period of time is an integral element within her work.
Richard's ideas and feelings are expressed through his sensitive carving in stone and wood. Inspired by his local environment and his past mountain climbing expeditions Richard expresses the meandering forms of rivers and glaciers and the contrasts in the light and dark of the landscape.
Exhibition catalogue available.

DUO
15 September - 12 November 2006

An exhibition showing recent work by two national artists William Jefferies and Philip Hearsey.
William has created wonderful tapestries many of which are very sculptural. He enjoys exploring the exciting effects of texture, colour and imagery. 'My recent work takes my mission one stage further by the introduction of stainless steel to enable the work to break away from the conventional rectangular form.'
Creating an aesthetic balance with these tapestries is the work of Philip Hearsey who has manipulated his bronze forms to create engaging sculptural pieces with beautiful patinated and oxidised surfaces. 'The linear discipline engrained by my architectural background inevitably informs my sculptural work; but I am increasingly turning towards the less recognisably structured forms found in the natural landscape.'
