Workshops

Craft in the Bay delivers a wide range of creative courses in specialist craft areas that are suitable for the complete novice or those with some prior experience.

Courses normally run for 1 to 3 days and places are limited to a maximum of 8 so early booking is advisable.
The courses are delivered by professional artists and take place in our workshop areas at Craft in the Bay..

making a leather bag
Decorative knots and beads
Saturday 4th July 2009
Tutor: Suzen Millodot

Suitable for beginner level.
Do you have a stash of lovely old buttons, or Grandma's beads? Come and learn how to recycle them to make an original necklace with decorative knots.
A selection of beads will also be available for you to use. Cords, threads and findings supplied.
N.B. Beads with very small holes (less than 1mm) are not suitable.
Drawing with line and light

Take your drawing into a new dimension with this exciting workshop. Fun and informative - experimental for the confident and structured for the cautious, this workshop is designed for beginners or makers wishing to try something new. By the end of the day you should be able to:
- Make small geometric and organic sculptures.
- Work with light-gathering acrylic.
- Produce sculptures to your own design.

The workshop will include:
Assembling personal set ups to work from.
Translating drawing into three dimensions.
Working with card and different plastics.
Using sheets and rods of light-gathering acrylic, a special plastic that scoops up light and glows where it is cut.
Making sculptures that emphasise the edges of objects.

All equipment and materials will be provided.
Paperclay Lanterns
Saturday 11 & Sunday12 July
Tutor: Sara Jones
Times: 10.30am - 4.30pm
Cost: £90
Ceramicist Sara Jones will show you how to create a delicate lantern using paper clay. Similar to porcelain in it's appearance, this clay is ideal for the purpose of creating a translucent form. Sara will show you how to create low relief pattern or images in the clay and use hand building techniques to create your lantern form.

Sara can provide the electric lamp fitting with lead and plug attached for an additional cost of £5 payable on the day.
All materials will be provided.
Decorative Knotting and Beads

Suitable for intermediate level.
If you have already learnt how to use knots to make necklaces, come to this class and add to your knowledge with some new techniques.
Bring along any of your own beads that you would like to use. Suzen will also provide a selection of beads that can be used on the day. Cords, threads and findings will be provided.

A fascinating workshop looking at the world of plant dyes and how they can be applied to fabrics. Working with organic matter such as leaves, flower tops and vegetable skins, Claire will show you how to create a range of tones and colours and apply these to natural fabrics using methods such as tie & dye and Shibori.

All materials will be provided. Please wear old clothes/apron and bring along a pair of rubber gloves and carrier bags to take your work home.

Pottery: throwing and decorating

Suitable for beginner and intermediate level.

The two days will cover throwing skills on the potters wheel, including turning and decorating. Christine will also show you how to apply decorative slips to clay tiles using techniques such as feathering, wax resist, stencil and sgraffito.
All equipment and materials will be provided.
Please bring an apron.
Work can be left to dry and fired at Craft in the Bay for collection at a later date (normally two weeks following course).
An additional glazing session can be arranged if requested by students. Fee for glazing, including firing costs: £10/head.

Weaving: Lambswool Scarf

Learn to weave while making a soft lambswool scarf.
Quick and easy method to warp and set up the loom. Make the scarf your own design by choosing special effect yarns with textures and colours to go with the cream background of lambswool.

At the end of the weekend you will have designed, set up a loom, woven and wet finished a soft lambswool scarf.

Weaving: Huck Lace Scarf

Learn how to design huck lace and make a lambswool scarf featuring this technique. For the immediate weaver this can also be more adventurous by using a pick-up technique to make a free design.

At the end of the weekend you wil have a finished scarf featuring huck lace and will understand how to use this technique.

Another opportunity to work with textile artist Claire Cawte and learn how to manipulate fabrics and threads to create wonderful textures and colours. Removing fibres from natural woven materials can create a whole new surface. The fibres removed can be used as a base or can have other contrasting materials added such as wool and ribbons.

Applying the Nuno felt technique and overlaying fibres produces a totally new surface. Claire will show you how to apply other techniques such as Shibori to obtain another dimension to your work.
