Craft in the Bay delivers a wide range of creative courses in specialist craft areas that are suitable for the complete novice or those with some prior experience.
Courses normally run for 1 to 3 days and places are limited to a maximum of 8 so early booking is advisable.
The courses are delivered by professional artists and take place in our workshop areas at Craft in the Bay..

| Papermaking Books |

Create a hand made journal, album or scrapbook that is a one-of-a-kind creation. Use handmade and recycled papers, plant materials, parchments, fabrics and collected items personal to you.
When you want to commemorate a lifetime event such as a wedding, anniversary, birth or a child, graduation, award or retirement, few gifts create the sheer impact of a handmade book. To record special trips, moments, thoughts or feelings - a handmade book is simply incomparable.
Experienced fibre and print artist Catherine Lewis will guide you in the techniques of making your own paper, adding surface decoration using dyes and printmaking techniques, compiling the book, and hand stitching to bind.
Students are asked to bring: Personal items that you wish to incorporate into your book, a general art kit (brushes, pencil, ruler, craft knife), any nice papers that you would like to use.

Knitting with a difference! This workshop is suitable for those who already have a basic knowledge of how to hand knit - Judi will show you how to create 'yarn' from ordinary lengths of fabric and then use this to knit a fun bag based on a choice of patterns.
All materials will be provided but if you have fabric that you would like to incorporate into your design then please bring it along with you on the day. |

| Sculptural ceramics |

Potter Mick Morgan will be showing students how to create sculptural forms in clay during this two day course. Currently showing his work in our DUO exhibition, Mick will cover techniques in slab building and creating surface pattern. A glazing half day session will be arranged to follow in October for those interested.

Eve will show you how to create fun items of jewellery and accessories from recycled materials in this colourful workshop. Suitable for all ability levels, the workshop will look at ways of using plastics, wire, feathers, dice and all sorts of interesting bits & bobs into unique designs for you to wear.
All materials will be provided but you are welcome to bring any old beads etc that you may like to incorporate into your designs.

| Fused Glass |
Friday 19th, Saturday 20th & Sunday 21st September

Suitable for beginner level, this course will cover skills in cutting and layering glass and then fusing this together in the kiln to create fascinating colours, forms and textures. Bill will show you how to file, drill and shape your pieces, incorporating organic and man made materials into your designs.
All materials will be provided.
For those interested in taking these skills a stage further then Bill will be running an intermediate/advanced course in November at Craft in the Bay where you will look at design skills and create more three-dimensional forms in glass.

An opportunity to learn this fascinating craft of knotwork for jewellery making. Suzen will show you how to create different types of knotwork that can be used with recycled and new beads. The results are stunning and very practical - no more fiddly fastenings to try your patience!
Suzen will provide materials but if you would like to bring along any beads that you have at home then please do (ones with very small holes would not be suitable). |

A second chance to explore this intriguing world of batik where Wendy will show you how to design and create an image on fabric using hot wax and colourful fabric dyes.
Wendy will provide design ideas for you but if you prefer to bring along your own inspiration such as a drawing, photograph, magazine cutting - then please do.
Basic tools and specialist equipment will be provided, but please bring along; apron, protective/disposable gloves, kitchen roll, soft (4B) pencil, masking tape, notepaper & pen.

| 'A Touch of Silk' |

During this course students will have the opportunity to learn about the versatility and practical uses of 'acid dye' for dying a variety of silk fabrics and threads used for machine and hand embroidery, patchwork and quilting.
Day 2 will focus on wearable silk art (scarf painting) and picutres using Gutta Serti and French 'steam' fix silk paint.
Please bring; hand embroidery needles, embroidery frame if you have one, 6-strand embroidery cottons, apron, rubber gloves.
Sewing machines will be provided but you are welcome to bring your own if you prefer.
