Catherine is currently studying for her MA Fine Art - Contemporary Dialogues at Swansea Metropolitan University. She has been making textile and print based artwork since gaining her BA degree in printed textile design from Chelsea College of Art in 1994. She works within the community and environment as a freelance art teacher and practitioner, specialising in print, papermaking and textile techniques. Her work utilises a multitude of media, is process led and conceptual in approach.
"Although my artworks are often in a virtual or digital format, the lure of material processes always draws me back to working physically with materials. I explore issues surrounding new technology in an art context, and the relationship between traditional making and modern communication. The use of environmentally sound materials and techniques is essential to me. I try to work only with what I already have or am given, and am inspired by the Arte Povera tradition. My materials are reclaimed and recycled, natural and synthetic, solid and virtual."
She has exhibited widely in Wales, Great Britain and Canada and has undertaken residencies in many locations and settings including Cardiff, the Afan Valley, Shire Newton, Groundwork Caerphilly and Québec City.
She has received awards from Wales Arts International, International Business Wales, the Arts Council of Wales and the Prince's Trust.
She is currently a trustee of the Women' s Arts Association based in Cardiff and is a founder member of the artist group MaP - Makers and Practitioners. |
