My work is based on a love of words, combined with a passion for colour. texture and pattern. Recent work has concentrated on exploring lettering, texture and the three-dimensional but I am also interested on combining more delicate watercolour or gouache illustrations with lettering. Words and quotations suggest their own visual imagery, or I have an idea for a particular texture and colours and the words then present themselves at a later date.
I have experimented with making my own textured paper or paper fragments and I paint words with a fine brush or write them with a steel pen in ink or gouache. I find inspiration in industrial landscapes and nature.
I am fascinated by the way things in nature change over time and how degrees of decay, as in a skeleton leaf or a patch of mould or mildew, can have a haunting beauty all of its own. I am drawn to words and quotations, which evoke the transience and vulnerability of life. I am also interested in buildings and the idea of how the walls and structures somehow absorb the spirit of different ages and of the people who lived in and around them.
