Gill Hellis first started painting on silk in 1987 when she lived in Belgium. Jane Varrall and Jill Kennedy taught her the basic techniques which included gutta serti, faux batik, water colour and procion cold water dyes. Using these and other techniques, she is able to hand paint into her designs a wide range of special effects and vibrant colours.
She joined ‘Makers’ in Cowbridge in 1993 and the Makers Guild in Wales in March 1996. She has demonstrated silk painting at women’s groups, church groups, art societies, Craft in the Bay and the Royal Welsh Show. In May 2000, she and two other makers demonstrated their work in Lyon, France representing Wales.
