Selwyn developed his skills in silversmithing in the mid sixties, gaining a Final City & Guilds in Goldsmithing & Silversmithing.Adapting his silversmithing skills, he taught himself jewellery making and developed an interest in gemology. A career in education took over but having retired early, he is again designing & making.

His work generally falls into five distinct but overlapping categories - Reflections, Textures, Celtic Influences, Chains and Inspirations.

In his work with Reflections he has experimented with different forms of containment for gemstones to exploit the reflection of the setting, the stone or highly reflective beads.

Textures are many and varied. He particularly likes those produced using a combination of cuttlefish and lost wax casting with strategically mounted oval and round stones.

Celtic Influences, as the name implies, is an area of work that innovatively applies the swirls and circles often evident in Celtic art.

He especially enjoys making chains. Most involve techniques originating in his gold and silversmithing background, where one of the central skills is that of hammering metal.

His final Inspirations category is concerned with gemstone mounting and setting. Flowing and sympathetic shapes, reflective surfaces and presenting gemstones to advantage are the basis of the work.

His jewellery is made in gold, platinum and silver, usually with mounted precious or semi-precious stones or pearls.

His work is on permanent display at the Makers Guild in Wales Gallery, Craft in the Bay, Cardiff. Most of his other work is to commission.
