The dominant influence for much of my work is the immediate landscape around the coast. From the monumental cliff face dropping sheer away into the sea to the tiny lace-like lichen clambering over the rocks, this landscape offers immense diversity and beauty. Contrasts are nowhere more clearly defined than here; rough-smooth, light-dark, movement-stillness, noise-silence, lasting-fleeting. These contrasts, sometimes subtle and refined, other times, massive and plainly evident, act upon the senses and the imagination.
I use a range of techniques to allow me to translate these ideas and moods into patterns, surfaces and textures. Different forms of appliqué combined with layering and overlapping produce rich and vibrant coloured surfaces. Transparent fabrics and lace-work on water soluble fabric add lightness and delicacy, while heavily worked machine stitchery suggests movement and depth.
