A Makers Guild Wales ‘Well-Being Through Craft’ Community Engagement Project
Every Tuesday morning for ten weeks we welcomed six people to our Clay & Paint course led by local artist Thomasin Toohie. A professional artist, Thomasin has a distinctive style in hand building and hand painting her ceramic sculptures, each having their own delightful narrative.
In continuation of the Makers Guild Wales partnership with the group Celebration of Welsh Contemporary Painting, Thomasin was a perfect choice for bringing together both pottery and painting to our community based project. Supported with funds from the Arts Council of Wales through our community education programme, we were able to offer members of the public the opportunity to attend the weekly classes, learn and develop design and making skills and enjoy working within a small group, supporting well-being through creativity.
From Thomasin:
‘The ten week project looked at how painting and ceramics can be combined in an amalgamation of form and surface. We firstly looked at mark making with a freedom to experiment through line and colour. We then moved on to composition and how the placing of elements works on a 3D object.
Week four saw us making tiles and shallow dishes which were then painted with coloured slips. We then constructed pieces using the slab building method.
Following on from this, we explored watercolour painting and brushwork techniques to gain some knowledge about how underglaze colours can be layered in the same way alongside ceramic crayons. Lastly we did an introduction to colour theory, mixing greys from a limited palette.
Overall the project was a chance to play and explore with a basic structure as a jumping off point.’
