DANIEL HARRISON

bespoke Furniture Maker

Mandy Nash
Daniel Harrison is an award winning furniture designer-maker based in Swansea, South Wales, using native Welsh and sustainable woods. His studio uses a combination of precision digital machinery, essential for the creation of contempory fine furniture, alongside traditional hand tools steeped in tradition, worked by hand and eye.

Daniel endeavours to use native and sustainable woods in all his work, often using trees that once stood within a 15-mile radius of his local sawmill. He works closely with foresters, timber merchants and interior designers, personally hand selecting the material for his projects. His deep respect for wood ensures that it’s natural beauty is celebrated and lives on in a new form for future generations.

In 2016 Daniel became a Queen Elizabeth Trust Scholar (QEST), which funded a period of extended training with renowned furniture maker Philip Koomen at his Oxfordshire workshop. In 2018 Daniel won the ‘Best use of British Timber Award’ given by Woodland Heritage for his ‘Grace’ circular dining table. This piece was exhibited at the Celebration of Craftsmanship in Cheltenham and made using different types of ash wood including locally sourced Welsh ash.

'There is something spiritual about the nature of trees - majestic giants in harmony with their surroundings, supporting life. We have been using wood since the dawn of humankind and today we can still connect with this most magnificent material. A piece of hand made furniture has a very different feel from one that is mass-produced: the spirit of the tree lives on in another form for another generation.
I hope my furniture brings a sense of joy and meaning to others; whether working to a client’s brief or making a new speculative piece, I strive to do justice to the tree from where the wood came.' DH

Mae Daniel Harrison yn wneuthurwr a dyluniwr dodrefn wobrwyedig wedi'i leoli yn Abertawe, De Cymru, gan ddefnyddio coedwigoedd brodorol a chynaliadwy Cymreig. Mae Daniel yn defnyddio cyfuniad o beiriannau digidol manwl gywir, sy'n hanfodol ar gyfer creu dodrefn cain cyfoes, ochr yn ochr ag offer llaw draddodiadol gan weithio â llaw a llygad.

Mae Daniel yn ymdrechu i ddefnyddio coedwigoedd brodorol a chynaliadwy yn ei holl waith, gan ddefnyddio coed a arferai sefyll o fewn radiws o 15 milltir i'w felin lifio leol. Mae'n gweithio'n agos gyda choedwigwyr, masnachwyr coed a dylunwyr mewnol, gan ddewis y deunydd ar gyfer ei brosiectau â llaw. Mae ei barch tuag at bren yn sicrhau bod ei harddwch naturiol yn cael ei ddathlu ac yn byw ymlaen ar ffurf newydd ar gyfer cenedlaethau'r dyfodol.

Yn 2016 daeth Daniel yn Ysgolor Ymddiriedolaeth y Frenhines Elizabeth (QEST), a ariannodd gyfnod o hyfforddiant estynedig gyda'r gwneuthurwr dodrefn enwog Philip Koomen yn ei weithdy yn Swydd Rhydychen. Yn 2018 enillodd Daniel wobr y ‘Defnydd Gorau o Bren Prydain’ a roddwyd gan Woodland Heritage am ei fwrdd bwyta crwn ‘Grace’. Arddangoswyd y darn hwn yn Nathliad Crefftwaith yn Cheltenham. Fe gafodd y darn eu creu gan ddefnyddio gwahanol fathau o bren ynn gan gynnwys onnen Gymreig o ffynonellau lleol.

'Mae rhywbeth ysbrydol am natur coed - cewri mawreddog mewn cytgord â'u hamgylchedd, gan gefnogi bywyd. Rydym wedi bod yn defnyddio pren ers dechrau'r ddynoliaeth a heddiw gallwn gysylltu â'r deunydd godidog hwn o hyd. Mae gan ddarn o ddodrefnyn â llaw deimlad gwahanol iawn i un sy'n cael ei gynhyrchu ar raddfa fawr: mae ysbryd y goeden yn byw mewn ffurf arall ar gyfer cenhedlaeth arall. Rwy'n gobeithio y bydd fy nghasgliad yn dod ag ymdeimlad o lawenydd ac ystyr i eraill; boed yn gweithio i friff cleient neu'n gwneud darn hapfasnachol newydd, rwy'n ymdrechu i wneud cyfiawnder â'r goeden o ble y daeth y pren.'
