DARREN BALL

Embroidery / Brodwaith

Mandy Nash
Darren trained in Fashion Textiles, specializing in hand knit. He taught himself free machine embroidery whilst teaching art and textiles in secondary and further education. He now focusses on making his framed bespoke embroideries.

Darren uses applique and free machine embroidery to illustrate personal narratives or ideas, inspired by memorabilia and his collection of vintage Stitchcraft knitting magazines. Using these techniques he explores the qualities of mark making and contrasts of surface that can be created.

He works with vintage and repurposed fabrics which have been collected over many years, resulting in a found palette of colour. The bespoke nature of his work is emphasized by his use of vintage fabrics and handkerchiefs in combination with his unique knitting skills.

His floral work is inspired by French seed pack labels of the 1920s and their jewel like colour and simplified composition.  Both his figurative and floral works are developed into a beautiful range of cards and handmade products making use of Darren’s striking imagery through digital print.

Darren creates contemporary work which references and celebrates particularly women’s domestic life and craftsmanship of the past, repurposing vintage fabrics for a new audience to be enjoyed now and in the future.

Hyfforddodd Darren mewn Tecstilau Ffasiwn, gan arbenigo mewn gwau â llaw. Dysgodd frodwaith peiriant rhydd iddo'i hun wrth addysgu celf a thecstilau mewn addysg uwchradd ac addysg bellach. Mae bellach yn canolbwyntio ar greu ei frodweithiau pwrpasol wedi'u fframio.

Mae Darren yn defnyddio brodwaith applique a pheiriant rhydd i ddarlunio naratifau neu syniadau personol, wedi'u hysbrydoli gan bethau cofiadwy a'i gasgliad o gylchgronau gwau ‘Stitchcraft’ hen ffasiwn. Gan ddefnyddio'r technegau hyn mae'n archwilio rhinweddau gwneud marciau a chyferbyniadau arwyneb y gellir eu creu. Mae'n gweithio gyda ffabrigau hen ffasiwn ac wedi'u hailbwrpasu, sydd wedi'u casglu dros nifer o flynyddoedd, gan arwain at balet lliw newydd. Pwysleisir natur bwrpasol ei waith gan ei ddefnydd o ffabrigau a hancesi hen ffasiwn ar y cyd â'i sgiliau gwau unigryw.

Mae ei waith blodau wedi'i ysbrydoli gan labeli pecynnau hadau Ffrengig y 1920au a'u lliw tebyg i emau a'u cyfansoddiad symlach. Mae ei weithiau ffigurol a blodau wedi'u datblygu'n ystod hardd o gardiau a chynhyrchion wedi'u gwneud â llaw gan ddefnyddio delweddaeth drawiadol Darren trwy brint digidol.

Mae Darren yn creu gwaith cyfoes sy'n cyfeirio at ac yn dathlu bywyd domestig menywod a chrefftwaith y gorffennol yn benodol, gan ailddefnyddio ffabrigau hen ffasiwn ar gyfer cynulleidfa newydd i'w mwynhau nawr ac yn y dyfodol.

Textile Narratives | Naratifau Tecstilau
The ideas for these embroideries emerge from Darren’s knowledge and love of knit and textiles. Whilst researching the history of knit he came across a portrait of the Duke of Windsor wearing a beautiful Fair Isle sweater. The story behind the painting inspired both of the embroideries David and Mary and began Darren’s exploration into the blending of knit and embroidery.
//
Mae'r syniadau ar gyfer y brodweithiau hyn yn deillio o wybodaeth a chariad Darren at wau a thecstilau. Wrth ymchwilio i hanes gwau, daeth ar draws portread o Ddug Windsor yn gwisgo siwmper Fair Isle hardd. Ysbrydolodd y stori y tu ôl i'r paentiad y ddau frodwaith David a Mary a dechreuodd archwiliad Darren i gyfuno gwau a brodwaith.
Ladies & Gentlemen | Boneddigion a boneddigesau
This work is made in response to Darren’s collection of 1940’s ‘Stitchcraft’ magazines. Vintage handkerchiefs and other textile finds all hint at past lives, these are reimagined here. The textile items inform the choice of figurative image used and suggest possible narratives. ‘Stitchcraft’ photographs and drawings provide the figurative element and ideas evolve from personal experiences, cultural references, film or textile histories.
//
Gwnaed y gwaith hwn mewn ymateb i gasgliad Darren o gylchgronau ‘Stitchcraft’ o’r 1940au. Mae hancesi hen ffasiwn a darganfyddiadau tecstilau eraill i gyd yn awgrymu bywydau’r gorffennol, ac mae’r rhain yn cael eu hail-ddychmygu yma. Mae’r eitemau tecstilau’n llywio’r dewis o ddelweddau ffigurol a ddefnyddir ac yn awgrymu naratifau posibl. Mae ffotograffau a lluniadau ‘Stitchcraft’ yn darparu’r elfen ffigurol ac mae syniadau’n esblygu o brofiadau personol, cyfeiriadau diwylliannol, hanesion ffilm neu decstilau.
Les Fleurs
In this ongoing project Darren aims to capture the rich colouring of his collection of French seed pack labels from the 1920’s using appliqué and free embroidery.
//

Yn y prosiect parhaus hwn, mae Darren yn anelu at ddal lliw cyfoethog ei gasgliad o labeli pecynnau hadau Ffrengig o'r 1920au gan ddefnyddio appliqué a brodwaith rhydd.
Légumes
As a broadening of Darren’s ‘Les Fleurs’ project he is creating an ongoing collection of ‘Légumes’. These are inspired by his 1920’s French seed pack labels and are embroidered to be the same size as the original labels.
//
Gan ehangu ar brosiect 'Les Fleurs' Darren, mae'n creu casgliad parhaus o 'Légumes'. Mae'r rhain wedi'u hysbrydoli gan ei labeli pecynnau hadau Ffrengig o'r 1920au ac wedi'u brodio i fod yr un maint â'r labeli gwreiddiol.
