HARRIETT CHAPMAN

Textile Artist / Arlunydd Tecstil

Mandy Nash
The effects of my surroundings as a child growing up in a creative household is the principal part of my work, enriched by artist parents and their friends, welsh patchwork quilts and samplers with their interesting haphazard patterns, all pieced together to tell a story, inspiring paintings antiques and colourful ceramics created an engaging visual feast for my senses. Home was an eccentric stimulating mix of colour and texture. My surroundings were part of my make-up and my art work is a response to my colourful and quirky life. My current work involves painting directly onto cloth, capturing a response to the subject, fabric paints with water, enables me to change the tones and include the background fabric as part of the work. Foiling paper adds to the image. The use of a variety of stitches gives texture to the surface of the work.
I originally studied Screen-printing at the London College of Printing. Then in 2002 I returned to Wales and completed the Surface Pattern Design degree at the Swansea Metropolitan.

Prif ran fy ngwaith yw effeithiau fy amgylchfyd fel plentyn yn tyfu i fyny mewn aelwyd greadigol, wedi'i gyfoethogi gan artistiaid a'u ffrindiau, cwiltiau clytwaith Cymreig a samplwyr gyda'u patrymau damweiniol, wedi'u clymu gan adrodd stori, ysbrydoli paentiadau hen a cherameg lliwgar sydd yn wledd weledol ddeniadol ar gyfer fy synhwyrau. Roedd fy nghartref yn gymysgedd ysgogol ecsentrig o liw a gwead. Roedd fy amgylchfyd yn rhan o'm personoliaeth ac mae fy ngwaith celf yn ymateb i'm bywyd lliwgar a rhyfeddol. Mae fy ngwaith presennol yn cynnwys peintio yn uniongyrchol ar frethyn, gan ddal ymateb i'r planhigyn, paent ffabrig gyda dŵr, mae’n fy ngalluogi i newid yr arlliwiau a chynnwys y ffabrig cefndir fel rhan o'r gwaith. Mae papur ffoil yn ychwanegu at y ddelwedd. Mae defnyddio amrywiaeth o bwythau yn rhoi gwead i wyneb y gwaith.
Astudiais argraffu sgrin yn wreiddiol yng Ngholeg Argraffu Llundain. Yna yn 2002 dychwelais i Gymru a chwblhau'r radd Dylunio Patrymau Arwyneb ym Mhrifysgol Fetropolitan Abertawe.
