SOLACE IN WOOD

woodworker

Mandy Nash
In his workshop in Dinas Powys, South Wales, using only ethically sourced and repurposed timber Karl Watkins from Solace in Wood makes unique wooden objects of beauty for everyday use and enjoyment.

Since returning to woodturning and carving five years ago after first trying it as a fourteen-year-old at school he has become increasingly fascinated by how green (unseasoned) wood changes shape as it dries out.  He strives to embrace the inherent qualities of the wood by creating objects that not only showcase the natural beauty of the material but also celebrate the organic and unpredictable nature of the wood itself.

Karl particularly enjoys the challenge of turning green timber almost paper-thin to encourage the pieces to twist and turn naturally as they dry out producing exciting and often unexpected results.  Pieces range from sculptural forms and hollow vessels to contemporary homeware items. He sometimes adds colour and texture by ebonising or dyeing and wire brushing.

Future plans include making larger scale turned objects and refining their forms further by steaming, carving and sandblasting.

Yn ei weithdy yn Ninas Powys, De Cymru, gan ddefnyddio pren o ffynonellau moesegol ac ailbwrpasol yn unig mae Karl Watkins o Solace in Wood yn gwneud gwrthrychau pren unigryw o harddwch at ddefnydd a mwynhad bob dydd.

Ers dychwelyd i droi pren a thurnio pren bum mlynedd yn ôl ar ôl rhoi cynnig arni gyntaf fel plentyn pedair ar ddeg oed yn yr ysgol mae wedi’u gyfareddu gan y ffordd y mae pren gwyrdd (heb sychu) yn newid siâp wrth iddo sychu. Mae’n ymdrechu i gofleidio rhinweddau cynhenid y pren trwy greu gwrthrychau sydd nid yn unig yn arddangos harddwch naturiol y deunydd ond sydd hefyd yn dathlu natur organig ac anrhagweladwy’r pren ei hun.

Mae Karl yn mwynhau’r her o droi pren gwyrdd bron yn denau fel papur er mwyn annog y darnau i droelli a throi’n naturiol wrth iddynt sychu gan gynhyrchu canlyniadau cyffrous ac annisgwyl yn aml. Mae darnau'n amrywio o ffurfiau cerfluniol a llestri ceunwyddau i nwyddau cartref cyfoes. Weithiau mae'n ychwanegu lliw a gwead trwy eboneiddio neu liwio a brwsio gwifrau.

Mae ganddo gynlluniau ar gyfer y dyfodol, gan gynnwys gwneud gwrthrychau wedi'u troi ar raddfa fwy a mireinio eu ffurfiau ymhellach trwy stemio, cerfio a sgwrio â thywod.
