MAKING OF HEART DISH
1. Blown bubbles (marked up)
The blown glass forms are free-blown (not in a mould) and are manipulated on the blow pipe when hot to create the unique shape. They are placed in a kiln and cooled slowly overnight until at room temperature.
Th bubbles are then marked with a marker pen and are carefully cut in half using a diamond impregnated blade that is water cooled to prevent shattering the glass.
Once they are sawed all the way around they create two dishes.
4.Bubbles and split bubbles
5. Cut raw edge
The sawn edge is rough and sharp
6. Ready to grind
The pieces are then flattened and smoothed by pressing the rim onto 'flat bed grinder' which is a bit like a potter's wheel with a slurry of water and carborundum grit to grind away the sharp edge.
7. Rims ground flat
Once flat the rims are continually ground with finer and finer grit until they are ready to be polished with pumice to bring the edge back to a shiny smooth glass finish.
8. Rims polished
