Introduction to Wood Engraving with Kath Littler
POSTPONED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE
Saturday 23rd May
10:30 - 16:30
A fascinating workshop exploring the craft of wood engraving with professional printmaker Kath Littler.
Kath moved from graphic design and painting in the late 90's whilst living in Dorset and finds the beauty of the landscape and coast as a great source of inspiration for her work. Now living in the Black Mountains Kath recreates the atmosphere of the landscapes in her exquisite wood engravings. Highly skilled in the craft, she exhibits regularly in galleries and is a member of the Society of Wood Engravers. The Society celebrate their Centenary this year with many events, exhibitions and courses across the country. www.woodengravers.co.uk
This one-day workshop is suitable for all abilities. For those with some prior experience Kath will guide you into developing your work further with reference to historical and contemporary designers. During the day you will learn:
- How to use engraving tools to make a variety of cuts for texture and tonal shading. Tonal arrangement is as important as line in this medium.
- How to plan a design and transfer it to a woodblock.
- How to print your design and develop it further to completion, taking home a small edition of final prints.
Practice blocks will be provided but larger blocks may be purchased during the course. All other tools and materials will be provided apart from your own drawing materials.
Please bring along a simple design (matchbox-size) that includes within it an area of black, an area of white, and 2/ 3 tones in between.
It would be helpful to bring a fat paperback book to support the block.
