ZACHARY DUNLAP
15th July - 25th August 2025
Zachary is a guest maker to the Makers Guild Wales. Voted the People’s Favourite Maker in our Emerging Makers exhibition in 2024, with the prize being a showcase of work at Craft in the Bay for six weeks. We are delighted to support the creative development of emerging makers and provide this opportunity to showcase Zach’s most recent explorations in sculptural lighting.
Zachary is a ceramic artist and ceramic design graduate of Cardiff School of Art & Design and now works from his studio in Carmarthenshire, South Wales. Living along the coast, he is constantly inspired by the natural environment around him, especially the sea. The colours, movement and fluidity of water deeply influence his palette and surface treatments.
His practice centres around glaze chemistry, with a particular focus on crystalline glaze. He is fascinated by the unpredictable beauty of crystals as they form in the kiln and much of his recent work explores how these surfaces interact with light. This has led him to design forms that emphasize reflection, shadow and the translucent qualities of the glaze.
Everyday shapes often inspire the silhouettes of his pieces - simple, functional and quietly familiar. With this latest body of work he has also had the opportunity to integrate new materials like wood and brass, expanding the way he thinks about construction and presentation. The process has been both challenging and rewarding and has allowed Zach to explore the dialogue between ceramics and other materials in a more sculptural way.
