Aelwyd - Towards a contemporary welsh interior
18th January - 1st march 2020

Aelwyd, the title of this exhibition, is Welsh for hearth – a word synonymous with home. Through their material, making, story or use, the objects in this exhibition explore a deep-rooted sense of belonging and home.
Fifteen makers, all from or living in Wales, create handmade items that are a pleasure to live with. Unique vessels by Deiniol Williams incorporate stones and silt collected from the Welsh landscape – so that a little piece of home becomes a defining part of each vessel. Llio James continues the tradition of Welsh textile design by making handwoven carthenni that are refreshingly contemporary. Household items, polished by many hands over the years, become treasured heirlooms and are documented for posterity in Sophie Schärer’s prints. And wheel-thrown
tableware by James and Tilla Waters are made to be used and enjoyed as part of our daily routine.
In exploring the affinity we feel towards handmade objects, Aelwyd invites you to follow one possible path towards a contemporary Welsh interior.
Exhibiting Artists: Claire Cawte, Sarah Christensen, Mandy Coates, Ann Catrin Evans, Rosie Farey, Helen Flynn, Astrid de Groot, Simon Hulbert, Llio James, Sophie Schärer, Mick Sheridan, James and Tilla Waters, Neil Wilkin, Deiniol Williams, Yusuke Yamamoto

Mae Aelwyd, teitl yr arddangosfa hon – yn air sy’n gyfystyr â chartref. Drwy eu deunydd, eu gwneud, eu stori neu eu defnydd, bydd y gwrthrychau yn yr arddangosfa hon yn archwilio synnwyr sydd wedi’i wreiddio’n ddwfn o berthyn a chartref. Pymtheg o wneuthurwyr, i gyd o Gymru neu’n byw yng Nghymru, yn creu eitemau wedi’u gwneud â llaw ac sy’n bleser byw â nhw. Mae llestri unigryw gan Deiniol Williams yn ymgorffori cerrig a silt sydd wedi’u casglu o’r dirwedd Gymreig – fel bod darn bach o gartref yn dod yn rhan ddiffiniol o bobl llestr. Mae Llio James yn parhau’r
traddodiad o ddylunio tecstilau Cymreig drwy wneud carthenni sydd wedi’u gwehyddu â llaw ac sy’n iachusol gyfoes. Daw eitemau’r cartref, wedi’u sgleinio gan ddwylo lawer dros y blynyddoedd, yn eiddo etifeddol a drysorir ac maent wedi’u dogfennu ar gyfer y dyfodol ym mhrintiau Sophie Schärer. A gwneir llestri bwrdd troell gan James a Tilla Waters i’w defnyddio a’u mwynhau’n rhan o’n harfer dyddiol. Wrth archwilio’r affinedd a deimlwn tuag at wrthrychau wedi’u gwneud â llaw, bydd Aelwyd yn eich gwahodd i ddilyn un llwybr posibl tuag at du mewn Cymreig cyfoes.
