CONNECT THROUGH CRAFT
Community Craft Project 2023-2025
With the support of the Arts Council of Wales, the Makers Guild Wales ran a fabulous programme of creative craft workshops for adults living within the Butetown/Cardiff Bay area. We were delighted to partner with the Haayat Women's Trust, running daytime and evening workshops at Craft in the Bay, Butetown Community Centre and Grange Pavilion. We also reached out to local residents and community groups, building relationships with our local communities and welcoming new visitors to the gallery. Workshops were led by our guild members in crafts including wood carving, enamelling, basket weaving, printmaking, papermaking, fabric transfer print, shibori, needlefelt, pottery and more. The feedback from the participants and tutors has been very positive and subject to funding we will continue with the project into 2026 and onwards.
'Karl's wooden spoon course was excellent. His patient calm manner and small step instruction meant we all succeeded in making a unique spoon. Such a pleasant group and calm, relaxed course. Highly recommend it to everyone.' - Anne
'Wooden spoon sessions were a relaxing and therapeutic space and Karl, the tutor, was an excellent and encouraging tutor and made us all feel very confortable with our skills and we achieved a finished product at the end of the session.' - N. S.
'Absolutely brilliant workshop and Lynda is a fantastic tutor.' - K. M.
'Well guided process, nice inspiration and lovely materials to work with. Thank you Lynda! These workshops are fantastic.' - Sarah
'Jodie's enthusiasm and clear instructions helped me make such good progress over the two sessions. Thank you Jodie =).' - Anne
'Brilliant classes, great tutor and ideas.' - K. S.
The designs Jodie taught us are very unique and beautiful. I thoroughly enjoyed the class.' - K. M.
'I attended 'Needle-felt animals' with Alison, who was so relaxed and encouraging. I loved the workshop! I was amazed at how inspiring some of the creations were. Thank you Alison!' - Anne

magic garden - artists in residence 2023

A summer project 2023 for families took place at Craft in the Bay. Artists sharing their skills to help families create a growing installation.
Our Community of Butetown has been a major focus of our organisation, and delivery of this project has enabled further engagement with our community,

August Community Art Project – Magic Garden held between 14th – 31st August 2023
The Workshops were free to attend and the tutors shared skills with those attending, allowing each participant to create their own part of the ever growing garden!
The Garden was then on display for two weeks in the exhibition area of the galllery.
This project was oversubscribed and we apologise to those hat weren't able to attend!

RECENT MAKERS GUILD WALES COMMUNITY CRAFT PROJECTS:

Celebrating Culture & Diversity
Earlier this year the Makers Guild Wales worked with craft makers and local residents of Butetown to offer weekly craft workshops - sharing craft skills, learning new ones and coming up with some fabulous craft objects including beaded jewellery, batik & transfer printed scarves, screen printed bags, clay sculpture and felted flowers!
We celebrated the work made in a special exhibition at Craft in the Bay.

Supported through the Anti-racist Wales Culture, Heritage & Sport Fund
