Metal Artist / Gwneuthurwyr fetal

Mandy Nash
Questions relating to place, location and by extension dislocation and movement, are a continuous focus in my work. I am interested in the space ‘in-between’, speaking of distance, borderland and a positioning of identity. Language occupies an important part in this inquiry, the idea of the ‘translator’ and the use of the ‘mother tongue’ as orientation, home and dwelling rather than physical location.
Each piece is built layer upon layer of drawn imagery, beginning on paper: drawings of lines, net structures with empty spaces, holes; the lines becoming the space itself, conveying a sense of dynamic movement.
I see the initial drawing process as a ‘rehearsal’ for the permanent marks to be cut; areas are removed by the laser, describing space, lines creating shadows on the wall behind forming the ‘double’. Subsequently, layers of enamel, fragile, yet hard and permanent, interrupt the juxtaposition of the cut spaces, each meticulously drawn, scratched, abraded and engraved. Here is the element of ‘chance’, the artwork being fired and re-fired several times, the handmade mark unpredictable and intimate.

Mae cwestiynau i’w wneud â man, lleoliad a estyniad datgymalu a symudiad, yn ffocws parhaus yn fy ngwaith. Mae gennyf ddiddordeb yn y gofod rhwng mannau, gan drafod pellter, gororau a lleoli hunaniaeth. Mae iaith yn meddiannu rhan bwysig yn yr ymchwiliad hwn, mae'r syniad o 'cyfieithydd' a'r defnydd o'r 'mamiaith' fel cyfeiriadedd, cartref ac annedd yn hytrach na lleoliad ffisegol.
Mae pob darn yn cael ei adeiladu allan o haenau o ddelweddau, gan ddechrau ar bapur: lluniau o linellau, strwythurau net â lleoedd gwag, tyllau; y llinellau yn newid i fod y gofod ei hun, gan gyfleu ymdeimlad o symudiad deinamig.
Rwy'n gweld y broses gychwynnol fel 'ymarfer' er mwyn torri’r marciau parhaol; ceiff ardaloedd eu dileu gan y laser, gan ddisgrifio gofod. Mae llinellau yn creu cysgodion ar y wal y tu ôl gan ffurfio'r 'dwbl'. Yn dilyn hynny, mae haenau o enamel, bregus, ac eto yn galed ac yn barhaol, yn torri ar draws y cyfosodiad o'r mannau torri, pob un wedi eu gwneud â llaw, wedi’u crafu, a’u hysgythru. Dyma'r elfen o 'siawns', mae'r gwaith celf yn cael eu tanio ac ail-danio sawl gwaith, gan wneud y marc â llaw yn anrhagweladwy a bregus.
