BEVERLEY BELL-HUGHES

Ceramicist / Gwneuthyrwr Cerameg

Mandy Nash
When I was at art school in the late sixties I wrote my final paper thesis on the relationship between natural forms and clay. But it is only since 1978 when I moved to Wales that I have developed ideas in my work directly related to where I live. I live between Conwy and Llandudno and have the benefit of being near to Snowdonia and the mountains. I also live near the river estuary of Conwy and spend a great deal of time, when I have it, on Deganwy beach.
My current work is influenced by the sea, seaweed, stones with holes in, bones, driftwood, barnacles on rocks and the tidal system. Marks left in the sand, water currents, whirlpools and much ore. The work is made using flattened coils of clay which other materials are added to change the surface texture. Various sands are used to change the surface. The work is pushed, pinched causing craters and holes. I don’t wish to imitate nature but aspire to echo the process of nature.

Pan oeddwn i yn yr ysgol gelf yn y chwedegau hwyr ysgrifennais fy thesis papur terfynol ar y berthnyas rhwng ffurfiau naturiol a chlai. Ond dim ond ers 1978 pan symudais i Gymru y datblygais I syniadau fy ngwaith gan ddefnyddio fy nghartref fel ysbrydoliaeth. Rwy’n byw rhwng Conwy a Llandudno ac yn cael y fantais o fod yn agos at Eryri a'r mynyddoedd. Rwyf i hefyd yn byw ger aber Afon Conwy ac yn treulio llawer o amser lle mae'n modd, ar draeth Deganwy.
Mae fy ngwaith cyfredeol yn cael ei dylanwadu gan y môr, gwymon, cerrig gyda thyllau ynddynt, esgyrn, broc môr, cregyn ar greigiau a’r system llanw. Marciau ar ôl yn y tywod, cerrynt dŵr, a mwynau eraill. Mae’r gwaith yn cael ei greu trwy ddefnyddio coiliau gwastad o glai gan ychwanegu defnyddiau eraill iddynt gan newid gwead yr arwyneb. Mae’r gwaith yn cael ei wthio, ei binsio gan achosi craterau a thyllau yn y gwaith. Nid wyf yn dymuno i ddynwared natur ond yn anelu at adleisio proses natur.
