CLARE REVERA

Basket maker / Gwneuthurwr Basgedi

Mandy Nash
I make traditional and non-traditional welsh baskets inspired by the colours and materials of the landscape around me. I am passionate about working with natural, sustainable materials found in the local countryside, hazel, willow and birch in particular. I also grow my own materials in my garden, on my field in Pembrokeshire and local community spaces.
I weave these materials into functional, useful baskets using age-old traditional techniques and designs but adding my own sense of individuality in terms of the colours and the decorative features which I add to the baskets. I am particularly interested in local baskets and regularly make the round Cyntell in a variety of sizes, the lighter weight Welsh shopper and the Welsh Tea Things basket. I love the fact that these baskets have been woven and used throughout time in Wales. I have learned the skills and techniques for weaving these baskets from master craftsmen who are dedicated to passing on their skills.
My contemporary Zarzo and Rope Coil baskets emphasize the curve of the willow and also use interesting woodland embellishments to enhance their beauty such as found twisted hazel handles and seed buttons. I am committed to sharing my own skills with others through high quality teaching and consider this an important part of my work.

Rwy'n creu basgedi Cymreig traddodiadol ac anhraddodiadol wedi'u hysbrydoli gan liwiau a deunyddiau'r dirwedd o'm cwmpas. Rwy'n mwynhau gweithio gyda deunyddiau naturiol, cynaliadwy a geir yng nghefn gwlad leol, cyll, helyg a bedw yn benodol. Rwyf hefyd yn tyfu fy neunyddiau fy hun yn fy ngardd, yn fy nghae yn Sir Benfro a lleoedd cymunedol lleol.
Rwy'n plethu'r deunyddiau hyn i fasgedi swyddogaethol, defnyddiol gan ddefnyddio technegau a dyluniadau traddodiadol ond gan ychwanegu fy unigolrwydd fy hun o ran y lliwiau a'r nodweddion addurnol rwy'n eu hychwanegu at y basgedi. Mae gen i ddiddordeb arbennig mewn basgedi lleol ac yn gwneud y Cyntell crwn yn rheolaidd mewn amrywiaeth o feintiau, y siopwr Cymreig - sef basged ysgafnach a’r fasged Pethau Te Cymreig. Rwyf wrth fy modd â'r ffaith bod y basgedi hyn wedi'u gwehyddu a'u defnyddio ers amser maith yng Nghymru. Rwyf wedi dysgu'r sgiliau a'r technegau gwehyddu gan brif grefftwyr sy'n ymroddedig i drosglwyddo eu sgiliau.
Mae fy masgedi cyfoes Zarzo a Rope Coil yn pwysleisio cromlin yr helyg a hefyd yn defnyddio addurniadau coetir diddorol i’w harddu, fel dolenni cyll troellog a botymau hadau. Rwyf wedi ymrwymo i rannu fy sgiliau fy hun ag eraill trwy addysgu o ansawdd uchel ac rwy'n ystyried hyn yn rhan bwysig o fy ngwaith.
