COLETTE DAVIES

Basket maker / Gwneuthurwr Basgedi

Picture
Colette is an artist and maker of contemporary baskets rooted in and inspired by traditional techniques. Her current work includes coiled baskets, wall pieces and some wearable basketry items. She lives and works in Monmouthshire, Wales. She has a particular interest in using plant fibres that she either gathers in her local environment or grows herself. She enjoys combining these natural fibres with repurposed synthetic marine debris which she collects from local Welsh beaches. By repurposing the found materials of the endless plastic pollution of humanity and exploring the juxtaposition between the synthetic and the natural she hopes to raise awareness of this ongoing issue.

Colette predominantly uses coiled basketry techniques, employing various stitching methods to sew the spiralled fibres of the core together. Exploring the play of colour, lines of stitching and the texture of fibres is fascinating to her and her work often crosses over into what she describes as textile baskets. Rhythm and process is integral to the way she works when searching for, gathering and preparing natural plant fibres. Colette is a founding member of South Wales Fibre Basketry group; a member of the Basketmakers Association and The Heritage Crafts Association.

Mae Colette yn arlunydd ac yn wneuthurwr basgedi cyfoes sydd wedi'u gwreiddio a’u hysbrydoli gan dechnegau traddodiadol. Mae ei gwaith cyfredol yn cynnwys basgedi torchog, darnau wal a rhai eitemau basgedi gwisgadwy. Mae hi'n byw ac yn gweithio yn Sir Fynwy, Cymru. Mae ganddi ddiddordeb arbennig mewn defnyddio ffibrau planhigion y mae hi naill ai'n eu casglu yn ei hamgylchedd lleol neu'n tyfu ei hun. Mae hi'n mwynhau cyfuno'r ffibrau naturiol hyn â malurion morol synthetig wedi'u hailosod y mae'n eu casglu o draethau lleol Cymru. Trwy ail-osod y deunyddiau a ddarganfuwyd o lygredd plastig diddiwedd dynoliaeth ac archwilio'r cyfosodiad rhwng y synthetig a'r naturiol mae hi'n gobeithio codi ymwybyddiaeth o'r mater parhaus hwn.

Mae Colette yn defnyddio technegau basgedi torchog yn bennaf, gan ddefnyddio amrywiol ddulliau pwytho i wnïo ffibrau troellog y craidd gyda'i gilydd. Mae’n mwynhau archwilio a chwarae â lliw, llinellau pwytho a gwead ffibrau ac mae ei gwaith yn aml yn croesi drosodd i'r hyn sy’n cael ei ddisgrifio fel basgedi tecstilau. Mae rhythm a phroses yn rhan annatod o'r ffordd y mae'n gweithio wrth chwilio, casglu a pharatoi ffibrau planhigion naturiol. Mae Colette yn aelod sefydlol o grŵp Basgedi Ffibr De Cymru; aelod o Gymdeithas y Gwneuthurwyr Basgedi a'r Gymdeithas Crefftau Treftadaeth.
