Curated by Mary Ann Simmons, Beate Gegenwart, Kye-Yeon Son.
Colloquy is a gathering for discussion, a conversation to investigate and discuss ideas, to create opportunities for learning and to share thoughts.
The curators of Colloquy have this as the focus of the exhibition; to bring together a selected, culturally diverse group of accomplished metalsmiths form the UK and Canada, who have been encouraged to share ideas and skills from their individual practices.
Comprising a carefully chosen spectrum of metalsmiths, from jewellers making intimate works to silversmiths working in a variety of 3D forms, to makers creating intricate wall panels. What unites these artists is a passion for metal as well as their strong individual practices. Each of the selected artists demonstrates a unique aesthetic and conceptual grounding.
Metal is an immensely varied and expressive material, with many artists increasingly challenging the perceptions of the medium using technical innovation to break many long-standing rules whilst maintaining traditions in metalwork. The selected makers and artists are pushing the boundaries of contemporary metalsmithing practice, blurring the distinctions between sculpture, jewellery and installation.
