IMOGEN MILLS

Textile Artist / Arlunydd Tecstil

Picture
Warp and weft are bound together in cloth, reliant on each other. Yet a fray, a loosening, a release of tension and a threat appears. Thread is the founding component, its vitality inherent in the breach of tension. The cloth matrix exposes vulnerabilities, tenuous relationships. There is an intermingling of lived experience. Mourning and memory breathe new resonances into fascinations with the fragility of tension. Fragmented moments of clarity, the threat passed; reconciliation begins.
We are separated, released, we are in digital space, then physical: this too is a threshold. We hold ourselves on the cusp. Life has altered completely. Each opening, closing, there is a st(tt)uttering, hovering, loom(ing).
Imogen is an artist that uses textile processes to explore the duality in the meaning of tension and in doing so, she is dismantling the loom finding new form in materials. Imogen is interested in the intrinsic language of textile to offer clarity in understanding our relationships. Weave, stitch, language is threaded, looped, folded, entangled. She makes assemblages using a mixture of washi papers, rusted iron wire, reappropriated artefacts and woven and stitched cloth. Imogen catalogues her work through photograms, which themselves offer a back and forth and new sites for understanding.
Graduating from Carmarthen School of Art with a specialism in weave, Imogen has just completed MA Textile; Contemporary Dialogues at Swansea UWTSD. Formally from a Community Arts and Gallery Education background, and now balances her education work as a lecturer with the development of her arts practice from her studio in West Wales.

Mae ystof a weft wedi'u rhwymo gyda'i gilydd mewn brethyn, yn dibynnu ar ei gilydd. Ac eto mae ffrwgwd, llacio, rhyddhad o densiwn a bygythiad yn ymddangos. Edau yw'r elfen sylfaen, ei bywiogrwydd yn gynhenid yn torri tensiwn. Mae'r matrics brethyn yn amlygu gwendidau, perthnasoedd tenau. Mae yna gymysgiad o brofiadau byw. Mae galar a chof yn rhoi cyseiniannau newydd i ddiddordebau gyda breuder tensiwn. Eiliadau darniog o eglurder, aeth y bygythiad heibio; cymod yn dechrau. Rydyn ni wedi ein gwahanu, ein rhyddhau, rydyn ni mewn gofod digidol, yna'n gorfforol: mae hwn hefyd yn drothwy.
Rydym yn dal ein hunain ar drothwy. Mae bywyd wedi newid yn llwyr. Mae pob agoriad, cau, mae technegau ‘stuttering, hovering a looming’. Artist yw Imogen sy’n defnyddio prosesau tecstilau i archwilio’r ddeuoliaeth yn ystyr tensiwn ac wrth wneud hynny, mae’n datgymalu’r
gŵydd gan ddod o hyd i ffurf newydd mewn defnyddiau.
Mae gan Imogen ddiddordeb yn iaith gynhenid tecstilau i gynnig eglurder wrth ddeall ein perthnasoedd. Gwehyddu, pwyth, iaith yn cael ei edafu, dolennu, plygu, maglu. Mae hi'n gwneud cyfosodiadau gan ddefnyddio cymysgedd o bapurau washi, gwifren haearn wedi rhydu, arteffactau wedi'u hailddefnyddio a brethyn wedi'i wehyddu a'i bwytho. Mae Imogen yn catalogio ei gwaith trwy ffotogramau, sydd eu hunain yn cynnig sgwrs a safleoedd newydd ar gyfer dealltwriaeth.
Wedi graddio o Ysgol Gelf Caerfyrddin gydag arbenigedd mewn gwehyddu, mae Imogen newydd gwblhau MA Tecstilau; Deialogau Cyfoes yn PCYDDS Abertawe. Mae’n ffurfiol o gefndir Addysg Celfyddydau Cymunedol ac Orielau, ac mae bellach yn cydbwyso ei gwaith addysg fel darlithydd gyda datblygiad ei hymarfer celfyddydol o’i stiwdio yng Ngorllewin Cymru.
