JAN BEENY

ceramics / Gweuthurwr Cerameg

Mandy Nash
Jan makes one-off, slab-built ceramic pieces on a variety of scales. Her pieces are based largely on animals, particularly how they move, behave and how human societies throughout time have been compelled to bestow significance upon animals by producing images, objects, stories and mythologies.
At present Jan is looking specifically at secondary sources for ideas such as the stylised depiction of animals in heraldry, medieval stained glass windows and tapestries. Often people find humour in her pieces although anthropomorphic sentimentality is something she tries to avoid.
Jan lives and works in Cardiff and shows her work in galleries all over the UK. She studied Ceramics at Cardiff, UK where she gained an M.A.

Mae Jan yn creu darnau cerameg a adeiladwyd mewn slabiau o glai unigol mewn gwahanol feintiau. Mae ei darnau yn seiliedig yn bennaf ar anifeiliaid, yn enwedig sut maent yn symud, ymddwyn a chymdeithasu. Ar hyn o bryd mae Jan yn edrych yn benodol ar ffynonellau eilaidd i gael syniadau megis y darlun graddoledig o anifeiliaid mewn herodraeth, ffenestri a thapestrïau gwydr lliw canoloesol. Yn aml, mae pobl yn gweld hiwmor yn eu darnau, er bod sentimentaliaeth anthropomorffig yn rhywbeth mae hi’n ceisio osgoi.
Mae Jan yn byw ac yn gweithio yng Nghaerdydd ac yn dangos ei gwaith mewn orielau ar hyd a lled y DU.
