JANE SAMUEL

Ceramicist / Gwneuthurwr Cerameg

Picture
Jane draws inspiration from the sea and surrounding shoreline, creating sculptures which reflect not only the natural elements of her surroundings, but also the nature of life and our journey through it.
The shards of bone china which fill stoneware forms, remind us of the many fragile layers found within broken shells, echoing the fragility of the human mind and body, couple this with the use of metal Jane tries to capture the unpredictability of life itself.
She uses white and grey stoneware clays, the former she colours using oxides to create a range of blacks and blues, which in turn bleed into her glazes creating further layers and complexities of colour.  Apart from the addition of metal and cloth, the bare forms are fired separately. The shards are added at the glazing stage. Jane uses several layers of glaze including for example, a lava glaze and Kuan snowflake glaze. After firing she will begin the final part of the journey where the surface of the lava glaze is ground away exposing the different elements and colours beneath.
Through these sculptures Jane has tried to create a catalyst between different materials and glazes that represent and reflect life.

Mae Jane yn cael ei hysbrydoli gan y môr a’r draethlin o’i amgylch, gan greu cerfluniau sy’n adlewyrchu nid yn unig elfennau naturiol ei hamgylchoedd, ond hefyd natur bywyd a’n taith drwyddo.
Mae’r darnau o lestri esgyrn sy’n llenwi ffurfiau llestri caled yn ein hatgoffa o’r haenau bregus niferus a geir o fewn cregyn wedi torri, gan adleisio breuder y meddwl a’r corff dynol, ynghyd â’r defnydd o fetel mae Jane yn ceisio dal natur anrhagweladwy bywyd ei hun.
Mae hi'n defnyddio clai crochenwaith caled gwyn a llwyd, mae’n lliwio’r clai gwyn gan ddefnyddio ocsidau i greu ystod o liwiau du a glas, sydd yn ei dro yn gwaedu i'w gwydreddau gan greu haenau pellach a chymhlethdodau lliw. Ar wahân i ychwanegu metel a brethyn, mae'r ffurflenni noeth yn cael eu tanio ar wahân. Mae'r darnau yn cael eu hychwanegu yn ystod y cyfnod gwydro. Mae Jane yn defnyddio sawl haen o wydredd gan gynnwys, er enghraifft, gwydredd lafa a gwydredd pluen eira Kuan. Ar ôl tanio bydd yn dechrau rhan olaf y daith lle mae wyneb y gwydredd lafa wedi'i ddaearu i ffwrdd gan ddatgelu'r gwahanol elfennau a lliwiau oddi tano.
Trwy'r cerfluniau hyn mae Jane wedi ceisio creu catalydd rhwng gwahanol ddeunyddiau a gwydreddau sy'n cynrychioli ac yn adlewyrchu bywyd.
