MAKER IN FOCUS: JILL RILEY

WEATHER PATTERNS
10 JUNE - 6 AUGUST 2023

Weather Patterns
2022 was a year of weather extremes: from heavy rain and high winds in January through a benign spring and a hot, dry parched summer, into a blaze of colour in autumn and a cold winter. As a textile artist and hand weaver, Jill is inspired by the impact of the weather on colours and textures in the landscape and how these change across the seasons.
Throughout 2022 she kept a visual diary of sketches and photographs to document the impact of the weather on the landscape in different parts of Wales. This became the foundation for designing 12 woven collage panels depicting changes in colour and texture.
The panels were woven as a double weave on a high twist paper yarn warp, painted with natural botanical inks and weft inserts of handmade silk papers, linen cotton and paper yarns dyed mostly with natural dyes.

Patrymau Tywydd
Roedd 2022 yn flwyddyn o dywydd eithafol: o law trwm a gwyntoedd cryfion ym mis Ionawr i wanwyn diniwed a haf sych a phoeth, i fwrlwm o liw yn yr hydref a gaeaf oer. Fel artist tecstilau a gwehydd llaw, mae Jill wedi’i hysbrydoli gan effaith y tywydd ar liwiau a gweadau yn y dirwedd a sut mae’r rhain yn newid ar draws y tymhorau.
Drwy gydol 2022 cadwodd ddyddiadur gweledol o frasluniau a ffotograffau i ddogfennu effaith y tywydd ar dirwedd mewn gwahanol rannau o Gymru. Daeth hyn yn sylfaen ar gyfer dylunio 12 panel collage wedi'u gwehyddu yn darlunio newidiadau mewn lliw a gwead.
Roedd y paneli wedi'u creu gan wehyddu dwbl ar ystof edafedd papur troellog uchel, wedi'i baentio ag inciau botanegol naturiol a mewnosodiadau weft o bapurau sidan wedi'u gwneud â llaw, cotwm lliain ac edafedd papur wedi'u lliwio'n bennaf â lliwiau naturiol.

MEET THE MAKER - Jill will be giving a talk about her weaving practice on Tuesday 1st August at 11am. A free event, booking not required.
