MEET OUR MAKERS

JILL RILEY

weaver / Gwehydd

Mandy Nash
I have lived and worked in Wales for over 30 years during which time I have developed and honed my textile skills alongside a professional and academic career. I make hand-woven textiles on a multi-shaft loom. These include wall-hangings, free standing art pieces, scarves and stoles.

I am especially interested in creating shapes and texture in woven fabric and combining different yarns and fibres for different effects, for example pleats, ridges and bubbles. I am continually exploring weave structures, material properties and finishing techniques. I take a multi-media approach to my work; as well as using of a wide range of fibres such as silk, linen, wool, cotton and polyester, I also incorporate monofilament, copper wire, felt and paper into my weaving in order to interpret my designs.

My inspiration comes primarily from the natural environment, the Welsh landscape, landforms and the local materials used in Welsh architecture. I am interested in how weather and seasonal changes affect colour and texture in the landscape. Throughout the year I travel to different parts of Wales and use these journeys to find new inspiration for my work, and to develop and reflect on my ideas.

Rwyf wedi byw a gweithio yng Nghymru ers dros 30 mlynedd ac yn ystod y cyfnod hwn rwyf wedi datblygu a mireinio fy sgiliau tecstilau ochr yn ochr â gyrfa broffesiynol ac academaidd. Rwy'n gwneud tecstilau wedi'u gwehyddu â llaw ar wŷdd aml-siafft. Mae'r rhain yn cynnwys crogluniau, darnau celf annibynnol, sgarffiau a stolau.

Mae gen i ddiddordeb arbennig mewn creu siapiau a gwead mewn ffabrig gwehyddu a chyfuno gwahanol edafedd a ffibrau ar gyfer gwahanol effeithiau, er enghraifft plethiadau, cribau a swigod. Rwy'n archwilio strwythurau gwehyddu, priodweddau deunydd a thechnegau yn barhaus. Rwy'n cymryd agwedd aml-gyfrwng at fy ngwaith; yn ogystal â defnyddio ystod eang o ffibrau fel sidan, lliain, gwlân, cotwm a polyester, rwyf hefyd yn cynnwys monofilament, gwifren gopr, ffelt a phapur yn fy ngwehyddu er mwyn dehongli fy nyluniadau.

Daw fy ysbrydoliaeth yn bennaf o'r amgylchedd naturiol, tirwedd Cymru, tirffurfiau a'r deunyddiau lleol a ddefnyddir ym mhensaernïaeth Cymru. Mae gen i ddiddordeb mewn sut mae newidiadau tywydd a thymhorol yn effeithio ar liw a gwead yn y dirwedd. Trwy gydol y flwyddyn rwy'n teithio i wahanol rannau o Gymru ac yn defnyddio'r teithiau hyn i ddod o hyd i ysbrydoliaeth newydd ar gyfer fy ngwaith, ac i ddatblygu a myfyrio ar fy syniadau.
