JOINED UP
A Design-Nation touring exhibition
20 April - 16 June 2024
Design-Nation is a portfolio organisation of some of the most acclaimed and innovative designers and craftspeople from across the UK.
“Joined Up” celebrates the way in which Design Nation members spanning the UK have created multidisciplinary support groups and communities within its membership. Each region has a group called a Cluster Hub.
The Wales and South West Cluster Hub is both separated by but also joined up by the two bridges across the River Severn. Musing upon this geography led the group to discuss how, as very different makers, they came together during Covid online to share their thoughts and feelings, get advice and bond across their multidisciplinary practices. This led to a wider discussion about Design Nation as a whole and how all the online meetings and courses brought together many of the members during challenging times.
The Wales and South West Cluster Hub decided to invite Design Nation members from across the UK to submit ‘lengths’ that represented their practice (either now, or where they aspired to be in the future) that could then be joined together to represent their community. The brief gave some parameters: the piece of work was to be between 30-100cm in length, no more than 10cm in width and allowed for a join to be made at both ends. Fifty members responded to the call-out and the resulting installation represents a huge diversity of practice, with fascinating connections being made between works during the curation process.
Alongside the presentation of the “Joined Up” collaborative installation, some members of Design Nation Wales and South West Cluster Hub who have contributed to the lengths are showing more examples from their varied creative practices.
Joined Up installation makers: Kirsty Adams, Judith Archer, Dawn Bache, Kate Bajic, Debbie Barber, Becca Beeby, Jan Bowman, Nessa Cargill Thompson, Jenny Chan, Kim Colebrook, Lowri Davies, Stevie Davies, Emma Fallon, Rachel Fitzpatrick, Barinder Gahir, Anne Gibbs, Bronwen Gwillim, Jo Hague, Myra Hutton, Katherine James, Llio James, Sarah May Johnson, Lizzie Kimbley, Hannah Lane, Carin Lindberg, Catriona Mackenzie, Bridget Macklin, Lindsey Mann, Annita McKee, Michaela McMillan, Melissa Montague, Angie Parker, Janine Partington, Rachel Peters, Liz Ramsay, Phiona Richards, Ruth Rignall, Belinda Rose, Emma Rule, Jan Scott, Jane Sedgwick, Suzanne Seed, Alison Shelton Brown, Elizabeth Sinkova, Lucy Spink, Rosalind Stoddart, Cathy Sutherland, Joanna Terry, Laura Thomas, Jade Leigh, Emma Westmacott
