Leather bags / bagiau lledr

Mandy Nash
I am a textile designer making handmade bags & purses form a workshop in my garden at home in Wales. My journey began at the University of Wales Institute, Cardiff, where in 2004 I was awarded a first class BA Honours degree in Contemporary Textile Practice – a fine art based course. I fell in love with silkscreen printing and looked to explore ways to create unique patterns. Having a passion for history I have always enjoyed visiting museums, especially military, transport and industrial museums where the stories and the interesting artefacts within them fascinate me. I soon realised that this was a great source of inspiration to create my own pattern designs. I began by photographing old tools, military items and all manner of mechanical & industrial devices, cogs, dials and engine parts from old aircraft, ships & vehicles for example. This is perhaps an unexpected starting point when you look at my final patterns but this is what I love about the process of design, the possibilities are endless and the journey is extremely individual. Using a computer programme I would then select from the photographs interesting abstract shapes and textures. These details were then further developed into pleasing contemporary patterns and then exposed on to a screen ready for printing. I have always been keen on using high quality natural materials such as linen, wool and leather. These fabrics are extremely hard wearing & durable and I am keen to ensure a practical and sturdy construction when creating my bags so that the finished product will not only look good but will ultimately last. I make each bag by hand and when you make a purchase from me you can feel good about supporting the handmade market as well as helping the environment by choosing natural fabrics and adopting a ‘Make it Last’ Philosophy.

Rwy'n ddylunydd tecstilau sy'n gwneud bagiau a phyrsiau wedi'u gwneud â llaw o fy ngweithdy yn fy ngardd, gartref yng Nghymru. Dechreuodd fy nhaith ym Mhrifysgol Athrofâu Cymru, Caerdydd, lle yn 2004 dyfarnwyd gradd Anrhydedd BA dosbarth cyntaf i mi mewn Ymarfer Tecstilau Cyfoes - cwrs celf gain. Fe wnes i syrthio mewn cariad ag argraffu sgrin sidan ac edrychais mewn i archwilio ffyrdd o greu patrymau unigryw. Gan fod gennyf angerdd am hanes, rwyf wedi mwynhau ymweld ag amgueddfeydd, yn enwedig amgueddfeydd milwrol, trafnidiaeth a diwydiannol lle mae'r straeon a'r arteffactau diddorol ynddynt yn fy swyno. Buan y sylweddolais fod hon yn ffynhonnell ysbrydoliaeth wych i greu fy nyluniadau patrwm fy hun. Dechreuais trwy dynnu lluniau o hen offer, eitemau milwrol a phob math o ddyfeisiau mecanyddol a diwydiannol, cogiau, deialau a rhannau injan o hen awyrennau, llongau a cherbydau er enghraifft. Efallai bod hwn yn fan cychwyn annisgwyl pan edrychwch ar fy mhatrymau terfynol ond dyma beth rydw i'n ei garu am y broses ddylunio, mae'r posibiliadau'n ddiddiwedd ac mae'r daith yn bersonol. Gan ddefnyddio rhaglen gyfrifiadurol byddwn wedyn yn dewis siapiau a gweadau haniaethol diddorol o'r ffotograffau. Yna datblygwyd y manylion hyn ymhellach yn batrymau cyfoes ac yna eu harddangos ar sgrin yn barod i'w hargraffu. Rwyf wedi bod yn awyddus i ddefnyddio deunyddiau naturiol o ansawdd uchel fel lliain, gwlân a lledr. Mae'r ffabrigau hyn yn hynod o galed ac yn wydn ac rwy'n awyddus i sicrhau adeiladwaith ymarferol a chadarn wrth greu fy magiau fel y bydd y cynnyrch gorffenedig nid yn unig yn edrych yn dda ond y byddent yn para. Rwy’n gwneud pob bag â llaw a phan fyddwch yn prynu oddi wrthyf gallwch deimlo’n dda am gefnogi artistiaid yn ogystal â helpu’r amgylchedd trwy ddewis ffabrigau naturiol a mabwysiadu Athroniaeth o brynu darnau sy’n para.
