MAKER IN FOCUS: HELLY POWELL

'During the spring of 2020 we were faced with particularly difficult times. In a moment of desperation I grabbed my loom and went for a walk in a local woodland and found a new sense of inspiration which gave me a place of refuge and comfort. Most of my Pleinair weaving begins in a bustling village or town with the ambition of hiking a hill or mountain.
The further I walk from the hustle and bustle of people the more synchronized I become with nature and the landscape. This is where the gathering begins as I bimble through the landscape I collect flora from the trail, unlocking a natural instinct deep within. An awakening of the hunter gatherer instinct. Then I find my place to sit, weave and breathe. The more time I spent within the landscape the more the landscape spoke to me. As I started sharing this work with friends and family I realized that it had a positive effect on their Mindfulness, wellbeing and became a great source of relaxation. I now feel compelled to share these moments and experiences with others in hope that it might also have the same effect' Helly Powell - The Pleinair Weaver
