MEIC WATTS

Stone Carver | Cerfiwr cerrig

About

Mandy Nash
Meic Watts was educated in North Wales, graduated from Norwich School of Art and was fortunate to then begin an apprenticeship with the sculptor Jonah Jones. With Jonah he studied lettercutting and stonecarving. At first this was with the local slates of North Wales and then progressed  on to limestones and granite. While assisting Jonah, Meic started to work on his own Public Art and private commissions through out Wales and England, carvings celebrating Welsh dramatists at the open air theatre at Parc Glynllifon, Tidemark at Cardiff Bay, the Slate Rope Bench in Hull, carved Slate Madonna at All Hallows Church Llantrisant, the John Evans Memorial at Waunfawr and St Ffraid’s Cross at Trearddur Bay to name a few.
'My work has diversified over the years and I have used glass, metal and other materials with stone. The inspiration has always been the stone itself and working with nature.'
Meic works from his studio in North Wales.
//
Addysgwyd Meic Watts yng Ngogledd Cymru, graddiodd o Ysgol Gelf Norwich ac roedd yn ffodus i ddechrau prentisiaeth gyda'r cerflunydd Jonah Jones. Ynghyd â Jona, astudiodd dorri llythrennau a cherfio cerrig. Ar y dechrau roedd hyn gyda llechi lleol Gogledd Cymru ac yna symud ymlaen i galchfaen a gwenithfaen. Wrth gynorthwyo Jonah, dechreuodd Meic weithio ar ei Gelf Gyhoeddus ei hun a chomisiynau preifat trwy Gymru a Lloegr, cerfiadau yn dathlu dramodwyr Cymreig yn y theatr awyr agored ym Mharc Glynllifon, Tidemark ym Mae Caerdydd, y Fainc Rhaff Llechi yn Hull, Llechi cerfiedig Madonna yn All Hallows Church Llantrisant, Cofeb John Evans yn Waunfawr a Chroes St Ffraid ym Mae Trearddur i enwi ond rhai.
'Mae fy ngwaith wedi arallgyfeirio dros y blynyddoedd ac rwyf wedi defnyddio gwydr, metel a deunyddiau eraill gyda charreg. Yr ysbrydoliaeth erioed fu'r garreg ei hun a gweithio gyda natur. '
Mae Meic yn gweithio o'i stiwdio yng Ngogledd Cymru.
