MOLLY CURLEY

ceramicist  / Gwneuthurwr Cerameg

Mandy Nash
Molly Curley trained at Cardiff College of Art, specialising in book illustration and teacher training then pursued a career in art education, finally taking early retirement in 1982, after sixteen years at Cardiff High School. Since that time, having discovered the joy of working with clay, she has developed a new career as a potter. Over the last twenty years the scope of her work has developed, various clays are now used, all wheelthrown to produce a range of domestic ware, mostly decorated with liquid clay (slip) and all fired in electric kilns. In addition there is a big demand for her commemorative ware (plates etc.) and houseplates, which are made to order in slip decorated earthenware.

Molly is a founder member of the Makers Guild in Wales, Oriel Makers and has also been involved with establishing Makers of Cowbridge. She is a member of South Wakes Potters and a professional member of the Craft Potters Association. She has exhibited widely and works from her studio in Llanishen where she lives and welcomes visitors by appointment.

Fe hyfforddodd Molly Curley yng Ngholeg Celf Caerdydd, gan arbenigo mewn darlunio llyfrau ac ymarfer dysgu. Wedyn, fe ddilynodd yrfa yn y byd dysgu nes iddi ymddeol yn gynnar ym 1982 ar ôl un mlynedd ar bymtheg yn Ysgol Uwchradd Caerdydd. Ers hynny, mae wedi darganfod y llawenydd o weithio â chlai, gan ddatblygu gyrfa newydd fel crochenydd. Dros yr ugain mlynedd diwethaf, mae ei gwaith wedi datblygu i gynnwys gwahanol fathau o glai i greu llestri troell ddomestig, wedi ei addurno yn bennaf â chlai hylifol (slip) gan eu tanio mewn odynau trydanol. Yn ogystal, mae galwad mawr am ei chrochenwaith coffaol (e.e. Platiau ac ati) a phlatiau ag enw’r tŷ, a wneir i gomisiwn mewn llestri pridd addurniadol.

Mae Molly yn un o sylfaenwyr Urdd Gwneuthurwyr Cymru, ‘Oriel Makers’ ac wedi bod yn ymwneud â sefydlu Gwneuthurwyr Y Bont-faen. Mae’n aelod o Grochenwyr De Wakes ac yn aelod proffesiynol o Gymdeithas Crochenwyr Crefft. Mae wedi arddangos yn eang ac yn gweithio o’i stiwdio yn Llanisien lle mae’n byw ac yn croesawu ymwelwyr drwy apwyntiad.
