MEET OUR MAKERS

MOLLY CURLEY

ceramicist  / Gwneuthurwr Cerameg

Mandy Nash
b.1929  - d. 2022

It was with great sadness that the members of the Makers Guild in Wales heard of the loss of Molly Curley in January 2022. Molly was the principal founder of our Guild. Molly was an instrumental figure within The Guild and generally within Crafts in Wales. (You can read our tribute here)
It was she who was the driving force behind the Craft & Design cooperative which grew into the Makers Guild in Wales we know today.
Molly
Curley trained at Cardiff College of Art, specialising in book illustration and teacher training then pursued a career in art education, finally taking early retirement in 1982, after sixteen years at Cardiff High School. Since that time, having discovered the joy of working with clay, she developed a new career as a potter. Over next thirty years the scope of her work developed, various clays were used, all wheelthrown to produce a range of domestic ware, mostly decorated with liquid clay (slip) and all fired in electric kilns. In addition she created commemorative ware and houseplates (which you can still see in use all over Cardiff and South Wales!).
Molly was a founder member of the Makers Guild in Wales, Oriel Makers and was also involved with establishing Makers of Cowbridge. She was a member of South Wakes Potters and of the Craft Potters Association.
