NANT DESIGNS

handmade books

Mandy Nash
Carole King (Nant Designs) makes books from her studio in West Wales.
Each volume is individually hand stitched and bound using traditional techniques and quality materials.
Many of her books are covered with handprinted papers in her own original designs. Her drawings are developed into repeating patterns and then transferred to silkscreens. Each colour is individually handprinted to produce multicolour designs on both paper and cloth. Notebooks, sketchbooks and journals, are filled with lined or artist quality papers, creating books for all purposes. Inspired by what she sees around her, the designs vary from the landscape to abstract patterns.
Paper covered books have cloth spines and corners to make them functional and long-lasting.
Vintage Japanese kimono fabrics have inspired a current series of work. The traditional production methods create narrow strips of cloth which determine the size and shape of book that can be created, making them ideal for tall journals. The wide variety of cloth remnants available create magical covers.
Many of Carole's books are enhanced with hand sewn headbands, ribbon ties, spines with beading and decorative stitching. Unusual constructions such as coptic and buttonhole bindings create a diverse range of books to explore. Every book is supplied with its own simple box for protection.

Mae pob cyfrol yn cael ei phwytho â llaw yn unigol a'i rhwymo gan ddefnyddio technegau traddodiadol a deunyddiau o safon. Mae llawer o'i llyfrau wedi'u gorchuddio â phapurau wedi'u hargraffu â llaw yn ei chynlluniau gwreiddiol ei hun. Datblygir ei darluniau yn batrymau ailadroddus ac yna eu trosglwyddo i sgriniau sidan. Mae pob lliw yn cael ei argraffu â llaw yn unigol i gynhyrchu dyluniadau amryliw ar bapur a brethyn. Mae llyfrau nodiadau, llyfrau braslunio a chyfnodolion yn cael eu llenwi â phapurau leinio neu ansawdd artist, gan greu llyfrau at bob pwrpas. Wedi’u hysbrydoli gan yr hyn y mae’n ei weld o’i chwmpas, mae’r dyluniadau’n amrywio o’r dirwedd i batrymau haniaethol.
Mae gan lyfrau wedi'u gorchuddio â phapur feingynau a chorneli brethyn i'w gwneud yn ymarferol ac maent yna yn hirbarhaol.
Mae hen ffabrigau cimono Japaneaidd wedi ysbrydoli cyfres gyfredol o waith. Mae'r dulliau cynhyrchu traddodiadol yn creu stribedi cul o frethyn sy'n pennu maint a siâp y llyfr y gellir ei greu, gan eu gwneud yn ddelfrydol ar gyfer cyfnodolion tal. Mae'r amrywiaeth eang o weddillion brethyn sydd ar gael yn creu gorchuddion hudolus. Mae llawer o lyfrau Carole wedi’u cyfoethogi â bandiau pen wedi’u gwnïo â llaw, clymau rhuban, pigau gyda gleinwaith a phwytho addurniadol. Mae cystrawennau anarferol fel rhwymiadau copitig a thyllau botwm yn creu ystod amrywiol o lyfrau i'w harchwilio. Mae pob llyfr yn cael ei flwch syml ei hun i'w warchod.
