PAULINE MONKCOM

Ceramicist / Gwneuthurwr Cerameg

Mandy Nash
Pauline Monkcom lives near Ammanford in mid Wales and has been a professional potter for twenty years. She exhibits widely and has work in several national collections, including the international collection of the Welsh Assembly. Docklands Series utilises printmaking as well as traditional ceramic techniques. The rich iridescent colours are achieved by low fire lustre reduction glazes. These contain small quantities of precious metals such as gold, silver and copper which migrate to the surface during the firing process. Historically, because of the materials used, and because there is an element of alchemy about the process, lustre is associated with preciousness and otherworldliness. It pleases me to use a technique with such arcane associations to celebrate such seemingly mundane details as sluice gates and saw mills.

Mae Pauline Monkcom yn byw ger Rhydaman yng Nghanolbarth Cymru ac mae'n grochenydd proffesiynol ers ugain mlynedd. Mae'n arddangos yn helaeth ac mae ganddi waith mewn amryw o gasgliadau cenedlaethol gan gynnwys casgliad rhyngwladol yn Y Cynulliad. Mae cyfres “Docklands” yn defnyddio printio ac ogystal â thechnegau ceramig traddodiadol. Mae'n creu'r lliwiau cryf symudliw wrth ddefnyddio gwydreddau mewn atmosffer gyda llai o ocsigen wrth eu tanio. Mae’r rhain yn cynnwys symiau bach o fetelau gwerthfawr fel aur, arian a chopr sy'n dod i’r wyneb yn ystod y broses tanio. Yn hanesyddol, oherwydd y deunyddiau a ddefnyddir, ac oherwydd bod elfen o alcemi yn y broses tanio, mae llewyrch yn gysylltiedig â deunyddiau gwerthfawr ac arallfydol. Rwy’n mwynhau defnyddio techneg â chysylltiadau dwfn i ddathlu cyfryw o fanylion sy’n ymddangos yn gyffredin fel llifddorau a melin llifo.
