Ruth Harries is an award winning textile artist who has exhibited both Nationally and Internationally including the ‘5th Triennial Textile Art of Today’ European touring exhibition; International Contemporary Craft Biennale, China; the Pfaff Art Embroidery, Paris, Netherlands & Sweden, and has Represented Wales in the ‘Festival Interceltique de L’Orient’. Her Awards include; Best Textiles Award – Selvedge Magazine at ‘Made by Hand’, 'Antiques of the Future’ Award - Homes & Antiques Magazine and ’Welsh Artist of the Year’ (overall winner) & ‘Mixed Media Award’. Commissions include the British Council, the National Trust and the Welsh Government.
Ruth’s textile work encompasses original hand and free machine stitch, fabric collage, as well as 3D sculptural mixed media pieces, varying from full colour to mono and from figurative to abstract. Themes are often inspired by her identity, background and observations from her surroundings, as well as the diverse intuitive and spontaneous qualities and characteristics of mark making produced by writing, drawing, painting, scribbling and script, interpreted in a free and expressive way, through the tactile quality of stitch, thread and materials. Ruth is also a member of Contemporary Applied Arts, London, a Founding member of ‘Fibre Art Wales’ , a member of the ‘Society of Embroidered Work’ and of the Makers Guild in Wales. |
