PAUL MITCHELL

Sculptor Paul Mitchell launches STONE – The Carved Form at the Makers Guild Wales gallery.  Paul has invited artists that demonstrate their mastery of stone carving by hand, whether in relief or in the three-dimensional form.
Paul has been carving in stone for over forty years, his early passion for sculpture and in particular with stone carving finding momentum following his art school training in the 1980’s, to work for four years as assistant to Italian marble carver Paul Narra. Extending this training at a specialist marble carving workshop in Florence.
Paul carves from his studio in Cardiff and is highly skilled in both sculptural and architectural stone carving. His latest body of figurative sculpture has grown from his interest in the subconscious, translating through narrative imagery, whilst at the root remains the simple love of working with stone.

Mae Paul Mitchell wedi bod yn cerfio mewn carreg ers dros ddeugain mlynedd. Fe oedd ei angerdd cynnar dros gerflunwaith ac yn benodol gyda cherfio cerrig wedi creu momentwm yn dilyn ei hyfforddiant ysgol gelf yn yr 1980’au. Cwblhaodd bedair blynedd o hyfforddiant fel cynorthwyydd i’r cerfiwr marmor Eidalaidd Paulo Narra. Ymestynodd yr hyfforddiant hwn i weithdy cerfio marmor arbenigol yn Fflorens.
Mae Paul yn cerfio o'i stiwdio yng Nghaerdydd ac mae'n fedrus iawn mewn cerflunio, cerfio cerrig pensaernïol a chadwraeth cerrig. Mae ei gorff diweddaraf o gerflunwaith ffigurol wedi tyfu o'i ddiddordeb yn yr isymwybod, gan gyfieithu trwy ddelweddau naratif, ond wrth wraidd y gwaith: cariad syml o weithio gyda charreg.
