STONE - THE CARVED FORM
8 MAY - 18 JULY 2021
An exhibition celebrating the extraordinary craftsmanship in contemporary stone sculpture in the UK.
Exhibition curator and sculptor Paul Mitchell launches STONE – The Carved Form at the Makers Guild Wales gallery this May. Mitchell has invited artists that demonstrate their mastery of stone carving by hand, whether in relief or in the three-dimensional form.
“I was very pleased to be invited to curate this show of stone sculpture. I have chosen artists who work in a variety of different stones, including granite, slate, limestone, marble, alabaster - in both figurative and abstract outcomes. The inherent qualities of the stone; its translucency, reflection, absorption of light, uncovered through the mastery of carving and finish.”
Paul Mitchell has been carving in stone for over forty years, his early passion for sculpture and in particular with stone carving finding momentum following his art school training in the 1980’s, to work for four years as assistant to Italian marble carver Paul Narra. Mitchell carves from his studio in Cardiff and is highly skilled in both sculptural and architectural stone carving. His latest body of figurative sculpture has grown from his interest in the subconscious, translating through narrative imagery, whilst at the root remains the simple love of working with stone.
